DISCOVER LEYSDOWN, WARDEN & SHELLNESS

Today, Leysdown, Warden and Shellness are known as traditional seaside resorts, with long sandy beaches (Quality Coast Award winner), amusements, nightclubs, camping and caravan sites and good food that offer a whole range of tastes for the summer visitor.  “Leysdown Rose Tinted” is an unfurling art project centred round the Spinney, Promenade and Beach Plaza that will enhance the surrounding area

It has the added attraction that it is within easy driving distance of London and the main towns of the South East.

However, its heritage is interwoven with a rich tapestry of aeronautical history – for Shellness is the cradle of aviation’s “first flight”.  The short Brothers headed up their headquarters at Muswell Manor where they acquired a flying field at Shellbeach and conducted their flying experiments here.

Also on this site, the world’s first aeroplane factory was built where historical names from the past met: JTC Moore-Brabazon, the Hon. CS Rolls, Griffith Brewer, AV Roe, Frank McClean and T.O.M. Sopwith and the world-famous Wright Brothers, together with many others.

Now you can visit Muswell Manor for a meal or a drink and view lots of early aviation memorabilia.  Then why not continue along the newly opened 9.5km cycle route from Leysdown to the Isle of Harty - perfect escapism that will stretch your legs and minds.

Sheppey Tourism Alliance have designed a leaflet all about Warden Bay and Leysdown and the places to visit there. Included in the leaflets are pictures and information about each site and a detailed map to help you find your way around. The leaflets are available from Sheppey tourist information Centre. The leaflets were produced by Sheppey Tourism Alliance and sponsored by Warden Bay and Leysdown Parish Councils.
